“We inspire the curious: those who wish to leave their routine and discover the new. When they see our name we quietly assure them that this space will reward their quest.”
The guests at Curio are passionate and independent travellers in search for local and authentic experiences. The essence of the brand lives in hotels with individual personalities that cannot be replicated. They are part of the city in which they’re born. They are true locals which incarnate the spirit of their home anywhere in the world.
These are hotels you wish to discover as you would meet a new person. Each has their own history and experiences. From the friendly to the grand anf from the elegant to the bold, these properties have been carefully selected because they are authentic and unique.
The interventions to our heritage must recognize the true meaning of these sites with the intention of recovering and maximizing cultural offer, meet points and respect for the inhabitants of urban centers which contain the memories of the population and generate a sense of belonging and love for the city.
The city acquires its own life and makes us a mirror of its current state. We give it constant movement, permanent transformation and sometimes even subtle decay, but it is never again what it once was. The city has changed.
In the number 69 of Venustiano Carranza street, formerly Capuchinas street, in the intersection with Palma we find a building which shouts its own history. Drowned by the sounds of the commerce and people who surround it, its voice was seldom heard by historians or storytellers roaming the streets. But the clues are there. Look up to notice the sober facade reading “Edificio España” or the subtle sign with the name of its creator: Francisco Cortina García. Engineer. 1924”.
Modern architecture also questions. It invokes the past and builds itself up from ruins and ashes. The building maintains the staircase that connects two spaces and two time periods. It evokes a style showing the many layers of paint that tell a story of adventures. The true art is in the way this is performed and how places like the historic downtown transition into the future. What will this area be like in a few years?
The task we have in the present is to stir in the past the buried futures. Hotel Umbral is proof of this hybrid: an archive of continuing memory. The architectural restoration plan strives for conservation while maintaining the values and contemporary adjustments grouping interior and exterior systems of levels, hallways, stairs and steps. This is a historic and timeless property which makes up for the first stone paved street which in colonial times went from being lined by distinguished homes and palaces to contemporary haberdasheries and markets.
The property hosts this story and is today a timeless urban refuge with private and public spaces such as restaurants, an art gallery, an archive, a projection room, a lobby, a terrace, a bar, a pool and a gym. The indirect lighting blurs the line between hotel and city. It's a metaphor of time. The existing materials polish its imperfections showcasing its splendour and grandness.
